Why you shouldn’t buy an Oil Boiler

Don’t purchase an oil burner before reading the following!

If you are looking to replace your oil boiler – the wrong decision could cost you tens of thousands of pounds!  Customers who replace an existing oil boiler with a Ground or Air Source Heat Pump will be eligible for the governments Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) from October 2012. Providing your install took place after June 15th 2009 and you meet the eligibility criteria then you will be able to receive an annual grant for 20 years meaning the pay-back on your heat pump is even quicker!

What is the RHI?

The Renewable Heat Incentive is part of the Energy Act 2008 and is designed to give incentives to people to heat their homes using micro generation and renewable technologies such as heat pumps. The RHI is proposed to come into effect in October 2012 and in the meantime you can apply for its sister scheme the Renewable Heat Premium Payment (RHPP). Details on both of these can be found here.

How much are the grants worth? The amount paid by the proposed incentive scheme depends on how much heat your home requires to give it a reasonable level of comfort.

The following table gives a very rough indication of the level of grant you might expect. These payments are likely to be guaranteed for 20 years although teh final details are yet to be announced. The Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) have indicated that these will be released before the end of the year.  3 bed terraced – approx £700 pa (Total £12K-16K)  3 bed semi-detached house – approx £1,000 pa (Total £18K-23K)  5 bed large detached – approx £2,500 pa (Total £57K)

An Air Source Heat Pump in a London Garden

What are heat pumps? Heat pumps use similar technology to your refrigerator – except in reverse. They take low level heat from the air or ground and concentrate it into much higher temperatures used to provide all the hot water and heat your home needs. For a more detailed technical explanation see here Quick Link – Request an estimate Do they work? YES! The mere fact the Government is introducing the scheme and backing the technology with huge grants will give you the confidence that heat pumps really will keep you warm while significantly reducing your carbon footprint and energy bills.

Ice Energy are the UK leaders and have supplied in excess of 6,000 heat pumps in the UK. We are always happy to put you in contact with one of our satisfied customersbefore you commit to buying one yourself.

heat pumps may seem like a new technology but in fact they have been used in much colder climates for decades. the technology was pioneered in Sweden more than 50 years ago where the oil reserves that we have benefited from were not so readily available. Almost 90% of new build projects in Sweden now incorporate ehat pump technology.

It saves me money too?

YES! it’s a double win, you could reduce your heating bills by over 50% (when compared to oil) as well as receive the annual payments. You won’t ever have to worry about reordering or running out of oil again and best of all you can remove the unsightly oil tank.

How much does it cost?

As you’re already thinking of changing your oil boiler it won’t cost a lot more in most cases. However, every home is different but we can give you an accurate estimate of the costs specifically for your home by filling in the form below   Don’t like forms? simply call us free on 0808 145 2333
